Big bang burst! A strike at the Port of Oakland early this morning forced the closure of several container terminals

According to our latest information: early this morning Beijing time (Wednesday morning local time), Oakland Port (West Coast of the United States) dock workers suddenly went on strike, including Everport, TraPac, OICT and Howard container terminals were closed, terminal operations completely shut down!

It is reported that after the strike, the port of Oakland also issued a notice at the first time, notify the strike may bring the impact and follow-up arrangements, content is as follows:

Auckland Port Strike-1

In the notice, the Port of Oakland gave an early warning and explained that the strike was "due to the expiration of the labor contract", which matched the feedback from our friends in the US trucking industry.

The contract between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA), which represents port employers, expired on July 1. Negotiations between the two sides, which began in May, have continued for several months but no new labor agreement has been signed. The first shift at all Auckland docks was closed for the day.

Auckland Port Strike-2

Foreign media reported that the stoppage was not an official action by the dock union ILWU. In fact, an ILWU spokesman said, "I haven't received any information about Oakland today, and if there is something going on there, it would be a local issue, not an issue for the union as a whole or the ports on the West Coast of the United States."

The Port of Oakland told local radio station KCBS in a statement that it was "aware of and closely monitoring the situation."

"We are working with our maritime partners to keep international trade flowing and protect local jobs. The port hopes the ILWU and PMA can resolve the issue so that importers and exporters in Auckland are not affected. The protesters have cleared the seaport area and our International Marine Terminal will try to reopen in the shift this evening (Wednesday night)."

The Port of Oakland said in an email to local fleet owners that "the port's Everport, TraPac, OICT, and Howard terminals were closed on Wednesday morning, Matson and shipper Transport Express terminals are still open."

Auckland Port Strike-3

"We're serious about this strike," longshoreman Keith Shanklin told KCBS Radio. "It's not just about money, it's about our livelihoods. To protect what you have, you have to be willing to fight for it. Now, we're willing to fight for it. We're willing to go out there and do what we have to do to show them that we're serious about this and we're not just playing around."

Prior to the strike, Oakland Docks had been waiting more than 10 days for ships due to a lack of work by the union, so any additional shutdown would only worsen the situation.
